SPAIN - Overview of online gambling activity during Q1 2021

The Spanish General Directorate of Gambling Affairs (“DGOJ”) has recently published the overview of online gambling activities in Spain during Q1 2021 which shows a significant growth with respect to the same quarter of 2020.

In particular, the figures published by the DGOJ show that the Gross Gaming Revenue (“GGR”) for the first quarter of 2021 was EUR 240.08 million, an increase of 3.8% compared to the previous quarter and 10.19% compared to the same quarter of 2020.

The report provides several relevant data such as a breakdown by gambling category, which shows in general terms that the EUR 240.08 million of GGR is distributed as follows: EUR 110.3 million in Betting (45.94%); EUR 3.6 million in Bingo (1.50%); EUR 99.5 million in Casino (41.44%), EUR 1.73 million in Contests (0.72%) and EUR 24.95 million in Poker (10.39%).

Likewise, it shows a decrease in marketing expenses of -1.74% compared to the previous quarter, most likely as a consequence of the entry into force of the new Royal Decree 958/2020 on commercial communications of gambling activities by the end of 2020. It should be noted that this is the first report published while this new Royal Decree was in force. The report also shows a growth in active gaming accounts of 6.42% compared to the previous quarter with an annual variation of 22.73%.
