The Spanish online gambling market continues its upward trend

The Spanish gambling regulator (the "DGOJ") has published figures of the Spanish gambling market for the second quarter of 2024. The figures are filed by licensed operators and after analyzing them, the DGOJ has published its conclusions on the current market situation.

The latest figures reflect that the Spanish online gambling market continues to grow with respect to the same quarter last year. The GGR (gross gaming revenue) for the quarter was EUR346.34 million, an increase of 10.79% year on year. Clear winners are once again sport betting with EUR145.48 million of the GGR (42.00%), showing a positive increase of 9.13% year on year. Casinos show EUR171.69 million (49.57%) of the GGR, with an annual increase of 14.57%; and Poker with EUR25.56 million (7.38%) of the GGR.

Marketing expenses were EUR120.21 million in the last quarter, meaning that the expenditure increased 6.59% quarter on quarter (most likely due to a ruling of the Supreme Court cancelling certain articles of the Royal Decree 958/2020 on gambling advertising, taking into account that quarter on quarter, Sponsorship has increased 24.64%; Promotions 11.85% and Advertising 5.24%).

The monthly average of active game accounts is 1,401,634; which implies an increase of 5.47% quarter on quarter and an increase of 23.65% year on year.

All the above reflects that online gambling activities are still very popular in Spain, and operators licensed in Spain have a significant number of active players.
