Cookies, consent, marketing and gambling - important UK judgment

In RTM v (1) Bonne Terre Limited (2) Hestview Limited, the English High Court found the Defendants, operating as Sky Bet, liable for breaches of data protection law. The claim raises important points of law for all organisations utilising cookies for targetted advertising, particularly those in the gambling industry, and we have written about the judgment in detail, here.

The judgment has already generated adverse coverage in the UK Press, and organisations, particularly those in the gambling sector, should be aware of the possible increase in data subject access requests, and copy-cat claims by disgruntled gamblers.
